Since my first working trip abroad in the early 1990's, I have been fortunate to have seen and worked in many different countries. Back then, pre internet, I was always fascinated by foreign newspapers. I treated them as a significant perk of travel - the opportunity to devour another nation's attitude to news.
Fast forward to today and just about any newspaper or magazine in any developed country is available to all of us. Yet, amazingly to me, few people take advantage of this. How can you not be fascinated by the workings of another country and its views on world events? With the Oscar winning movie Spotlight itself in the news it seemed apt to draw attention to my favourite way of spending a quite hour (not that little Hugo allows Daddy this perk very often)...
Therefore a real pleasure is my daily access to The New York Times. Nicknamed 'The Grey Lady' (because of its heavy bias towards copy, not illustrations), it is for me the most diverse, content-rich paper around. Day after day it nails exactly what I want: plenty of tech news, intelligent op ed pieces and the tendancy to stop short of self-serving wit and sarcasm, unlike most columnists in the UK. Oh, and no British sport, which bores me senseless.
The paper was also the subject of a fascinating documentary entitled Page One (see youtube clip below), which is well worth a look for the sneaky-peak provided into just how your news reaches you every day, regardless of your chosen newspaper, and the tireless work which goes into the process...
